He built his own home as a test to see just how efficient he could make a house. He’s also a home builder, specializing in buildings with solar panels to produce renewable energy and heavy insulation to conserve it. Songster is another member of 100% Athens. I’d hate to lose all those places completely.” “You go and you see what they were like 30 years ago, and then you see what they’re like now. “I spend a lot of time outdoors, and I’ve gotten to be old enough to see places change over time,” said Athens resident Michael Songster. “It really seems like the most important thing to do in the world,” Myers said.īut while the county works on its own properties, there are those in the community who are eager to make these renewable energy goals a reality and don’t think there’s time to waste. Renewable energy is one of her top priorities. ![]() She’s a member of 100% Athens, an environmental advocacy group. “Hopefully we’ll have enough of these different of these different pressures and influences that we can make that goal as much as possible locally,” said District 8 Commissioner Carol Myers.Įven before serving on the county commission, Myers was one of the citizens who worked to get Athens to commit to clean energy. The county has limited power to make private property owners move to renewable, and so for now, they plan to lead by example. Shifting a county of 127,000 people to fully-renewable electricity is a tall order. Even the county officials admit: It’s a tight deadline. Two years ago, the Athens-Clarke County government committed to move the community to fully renewable electricity by 2035. ![]()
